The peerless Californian comic Rachel Arieff has converted Monday nights in the Sidecar Club into an authentic orgy of rock-n-roll mimicry. There she acts as mistress of ceremonies in a hilarious show, open to the crowd members that reinvent the old formula of classic karaoke.
Surreal Karaoke
Rachel Arieff, a cabaret cyclone at Sidecar
Rachel Arieff is an original postmodern cabaretera that, upon arriving from California, settled in Barcelona. In just a few months she has left with mouth agape those that have been able to witness her talent live. Self-defined as an "expert in suicide postponement," this woman is an authentic cyclone. She has achieved that many decide that Monday night is the night to go out. This they do in order to attend her surreal sessions of Antikaraoke, that take place at 10 pm at the Sidecar Club.
A cathartic evening that turns the tired old concept of traditional karaoke on its head, transforming it into a one-of-a-kind event in which Rachel Arieff acts as mistress of ceremonies and performs a wide array of sketches, alternating with enthusiastic spectators that check their self-consciousness at the door.
Everything goes in this show, and the more extreme and outrageous the performances, the better. Of course, no one's allowed to take themselves seriously, and Arieff preaches by example. Whoever wishes to prolong the evening along the same vibe can do so at Fellini's Nasty Mondays. [Although Sidecar also offers a great DJ session after Anti-Karaoke, Rrrocky Mondays, that lasts until 5 in the morning. -Rachel]
